NEWBIESWhat Is HERS Rater Certification?I once heard that a house built to code is the worst we can legally build a home. Just because a home was built to code does not mean that the home performs as it should, which means homeowners suffer from high utility bills, hot and cold rooms, and even unsafe conditions where mold and dry rot have set in or carbon monoxide poisoning is a real risk. Even before a building code was ever established, over 130 million homes were built and how homeowners have suffered. Enter the RESNET HERS Rater.
RESNET is a nonprofit institute that develops standards for building energy efficiency ratings and certification systems. RESNET is primarily in the new home market, whereas it's sister organization BPI, is in the existing home market. RESNET is recognized by builders like Pulte, the IRS for tax credit qualification and Energy Star labeled homes for homeowners and LEED for Homes accreditation. RESNET certifies Home Energy Raters (HERS) who perform energy audits and can give the home a HERS Score. All Home Energy Rater candidates must pass a national online test and perform 5 ratings under the supervision of certified RESNET Home Energy Rater. Only then can the Home Energy Rater candidate be certified by a RESNET accredited Rating Provider. How To Become HERS Rater Certified?The RESNET National Rater Test is an on-line 50 question true or false/multiple choice test. The test is open book and raters have two hours to complete the test. The test is on building science concepts and rating procedures. Raters receive the results from the test immediately after completing the test. A passing score is 80%.
